Dress Shirt Base
The dress shirt base is pretty much the dress shirt minus the collar, placket, cuffs,
and pockets. The base makes up the foundation of the
men’s dress shirt without the extra trimmings.
Picking the right color for your dress shirt’s base delegates how you will choose
to style the rest of your dress shirt, from the
type of dress shirt collar you would like, to whether or not you
will have a single barrel cuff or a
men’s French cuff dress shirt, what color buttons you would have
and if you wanted a contrast placket.
When you design your own
custom dress shirts, it is always smart to start with the base since
it is the foundation of your personal dress shirt, and it helps you in deciding
how you would like to style the trimmings of your
quality dress shirt.
If you are going to go really wild with your shirt, you should pick a neutral base
fabric (simple stripes or solids) and then go crazy on the trimmings (gingham collar
lining, striped cuffs, etc.), or you can pick a crazy fabric for the base (like
windowpane patterns) and go neutral on the trimmings (white cuffs and white collar,
or a simple solid fabric for your placket, and cuff and collar lining.
