Barry Rubenstein

Federal Program Manager

“I grew up doing competitive Olympic-style weightlifting, and as a bigger guy, didn’t really care about what I wore. But when my daughter introduced my son and I to Blank Label it seemed like something I would enjoy. After my son got his suit, I decided to take the plunge.

I’d only ever worn a suit once before at my wedding, so I had a little bit of anxiety going into the fitting. I’ve never actually owned a suit before, let alone a custom suit, and I’ve never really liked shopping in the first place. I was kind of hanging on the Blank Label staff, and I was treated very gently. It was a good experience.

I feel this pinstripe fabric goes with my age, as I dress more conservatively. I’m retiring soon, but I’ll have plenty of special events to wear my suit to. I’ve worked in civil service, but I’m also a part-time clown and have a small business selling jewelry boxes. My background in college was actually archaeology. It’s interesting where life can take you.”

About Barry’s Outfit

Wear a suit – even if it’s your very first – with comfort and confidence. Barry pairs our navy pinstriped suit with a Blank Label blue dress shirt, all custom-made just for him.

Steve Aldeus

Creative Entrepreneur & Educator

“I worked as a salesman for a long time but I got tired of it. Then I was working at a gym as a personal trainer for a while. When I left that, I was like, ‘I’m going to do something myself. I’m going to be creative.’

I got into screenprinting. I made shirts. And I just kept looking for more. Imagine if you were able to go back to school now and learn to do whatever you wanted, create whatever you wanted. I think there’s a lot of great information out there, it’s just a matter of having the discipline to keep powering through.

My startup watchmaking project... that was especially near and dear to my heart, and I’d go back and do it all again. I just had a guy hit me up to make him a custom Rolling Stones watch... and I did it for him.

Custom always seemed to cost more. But the cool thing about Blank Label is that even though it’s custom, it doesn’t cost any more than I’d usually spend. I came in with an open mind, and when I walked in I was like ‘Wow... This is the place... This is great.’"

About Steve’s Outfit

From one creative endeavor to the next, Steve prefers a clean-casual look with his custom-made lightweight shirt. His casual button-down looks great untucked with a pair of denim or chinos.

Addison Lanier

Strategy Consultant

“My grandfather was always into Savile Row suits from London. He was 4” taller and a bit heavier, but we have the same shoulders so I resized his some of his old pieces and still wear them. I think of suits as a worthwhile investment.

I’ve owned a lot of dress shirts in the past. When I moved to business school I think I had 105 in my closet. Then my wife moved in...and...well...my closet space...

I visited Blank Label early on and I think I got the #6 originally produced suit. The first time I wore my pair of Blank Label pants, I was blatantly checked out by a passerby. When you get a compliment the very first time you wear something, that’s a pretty nice feeling. I’ve worn this tux at my wedding, my firm’s Christmas party, and on New Years Eve. I gave all of my groomsmen Blank Label shirts too.

I’ve been doing consulting for several years now, but during business school I had actually looked into the business model of custom womenswear. There’s just something nice about being able to say, ‘I want pants in that fabric, same style, but let’s add half an inch to the length this time.’”

About Addison’s Outfit

Whether at his wedding or formal events, Addison has worn our classic black tuxedo well. Here, he completes the black-tie look with a white covered placket shirt and adds a dash of his personality with a purple interior lining.

John Brody

Financial Associate

“I’ve tried on my old shirts and I just can't wear them anymore. I’m spoiled now.

I used to struggle with visible bagginess in the back and torso areas. I remember someone initially told me, ‘Once you get your Blank Label shirt, it will be your favorite shirt in your closet.’ When my first shirt arrived, I tried it on, and thought, ‘You were right. I will never go back to buying off-the-rack shirts.’

I’m a vocal guy at the office and I tell everyone to come here. Several of my coworkers now have suits that they love.

I remember a story about one of my coworkers; He got his suit the day before a meeting, wore it to that meeting the next day, and then came over to my desk to show me and he just said, ‘Hey... This is my Blank Label suit... It looks good... I love it...’ And I was like, ‘I know... Good... Now get back to some work.’ It’s true that everyone really loves wearing their Blank Label.”

About John’s Outfit

As an up-and-comer in the business world, John has made the smart decision to leave his poorly-fitting, off-the-rack shirts behind. Visiting our studio straight from work, John is pictured wearing his lavender Blank Label dress shirt with a classic tie.

Rob Rykowski

Gym Owner & Coach

“I used to wear yoga brands all the time – they were the only things that fit me. I could never wear chinos, almost never wore jeans. I used to work in an office and I had to wear business casual for that. Everything was really loose, so I would size way down to a 15 1⁄2, shirt; it became impossible to ever wear a tie. I mostly wore cheap clothes because nothing fit anyway, so I figured, ‘What’s the point?’

A couple of my friends and I always try to one-up each other. A friend of mine got me into rock climbing and I did that for a long time. Then another friend who used to work out told me he wore custom clothes. I said, ‘Ah, I can’t do that. Out of my price range.' But this was one of those guys who, when he says you can do something, you look into it.

When I put on my first Blank Label shirt, I started smiling. I’m so used to looking fat because other shirts never took my build into consideration. This was such a great look, though! You could see my shoulders, my back, and the shirt was actually tapering down. I remember I put it on, I looked at myself from the side in the mirror and I was like, ‘My God, man.’

That was the moment. Then I realized I needed everything else to work. I thought, ‘Now that I’m getting nice fitting clothes, I need some shoes', and while I was getting new shoes I was like, 'Well now I need jackets and outerwear’. All of these things were finally coming into place for me.”

About Rob’s Outfit

Rob has achieved a new peace of mind in his Blank Label experience. He wears one of our pink oxford dress shirts with our classic tan chinos and his new favorite leather jacket.

Bret Cohen

Lawyer

"If you take these photos with me and a cup of coffee, people are probably going to say, 'That looks right. It’s authentic Bret.'

I wear a suit and tie almost everyday. My first connection to Blank Label was through a friend of mine who invited me to visit your original location in Boston. I had done custom before, and believed in your approach.

This suit fit me perfectly without a single alteration when it arrived. At an event I attended recently while wearing the suit, I literally had 10 people come up to compliment me. I have a few of your dress shirts in my closet too. If I’m going out for drinks, I often wear a Blank Label shirt, a pair of nicely tailored jeans, and these shoes.

I’ve been a lawyer for a while now – originally a Midwesterner, and moved to Boston to grow a practice. I enjoy building the client relationships and the work itself – especially the strategy and the hunt of an exciting case. In the last two months, I’ve been everywhere from San Francisco to London for work. I am passionate about what I do for a living and I couldn’t see myself doing anything else."

About Bret’s Outfit

When it comes to smart work and smart dressing, Bret is a natural. His navy pinstripe suit and fine-check dress shirt is confident, no-fuss, and highly versatile along his travels.

Jason Fong

Financial Analyst

“I tried another custom company first, but it took 5 or 6 iterations just to get my fit right. It wasn’t a good experience. Then I found Blank Label.

It is incredibly hard to find clothes that fit. I had a few off-the-rack suits tailored, but it’s not the same as getting something custom-made for you. I was sort of hesitant about Blank Label because when I had worked with another custom company it was extremely difficult to get the fit the way I wanted. And there were the preconceived notions that custom is really expensive, it’s super complicated, and you don’t know if they’re going to get it right.

I now have about 30 shirts from Blank Label.

You guys have made it a lot easier to shop by having a personal touch – I actually get to talk to someone! The first person I spoke with at Blank Label guided me through the whole process and walked me through the shirts I was interested in. Once I got the fit it was pretty much clockwork. I’d log in to Blank Label Online, order a shirt, and then get it in about a week.”

About Jason’s Outfit

A long-time customer, Jason wears Blank Label shirts, suits, chinos, and now our winter outerwear – the Cashmere Wool Topcoat. Made by the same hands that craft his Blank Label suits, this heavy-weight coat is designed to Jason’s personal preferences and complements the fit of his entire wardrobe.

Ted Broderick

Financial Sales,
BNY Mellon

“I have no fashion sense – that’s why I came to Blank Label.

I was invited to Blank Label by my co-worker, Bill. At first, I was totally skeptical and didn’t really believe in this custom stuff. A) There’s a ton of tailoring, let’s see if they can really nail this. B) I’ve had custom shirts made before and they’ve been just okay – but you guys just get it. Plus, this was a much more fun experience. You’ve made me rethink this whole custom atmosphere.

I had no idea what I’m supposed to look like on a Friday night. Every ex-girlfriend has said: ‘Yes, you’re supposed to look nice on a Friday night.’ Now I know what to wear.

Working in an investment firm, I meet with a lot of clients and always try to look presentable. I keep extra shirts and suits in my office, but when I want to look my absolute best I put on my Blank Label shirts and feel great. I travel a lot too, so packing is pretty easy now that I have a few favorite shirts.

I want to get into the institutional side of finance so I can work bank to bank. More client work, and you live on an airplane. The story is always evolving.”

About Ted’s Outfit

Ted’s Blank Label shirts are his best fitting and most comfortable ever. He pairs his Pink Royal Oxford with a patterned tie at his office, and his Striped Oxford to dinner with friends. For someone with “no fashion sense,” these foundational shirts are perfect for Ted to wear for work and weekend.

Todd Vanderlin

Interaction Designer,
IDEO

“I spend all of my money on gear for biking, running, and athletic adventures. When it comes to clothes, I just don’t enjoy shopping.

I work in front of a computer all day, so I need to be comfortable and I don’t think much about what I wear – it’s honestly the last thing on my mind. So when I decided to make a change and put a little bit more effort into how I look everyday, my brother referred me to Blank Label. He told me that I could still be really comfortable in my shirts if they were custom-made to my liking. I thought I’d give it a shot.

Blank Label was able to make a casual shirt that fit just like my old favorite shirt. I also wear shorts year-round in Boston, so I’m looking forward to getting a new pair of custom shorts this summer.

My office has a pretty relaxed dress code, so it’s okay to come in with Carhartt work pants and a t-shirt. But I’ve been wearing my Blank Label chambrays and people have been noticing. I get a lot of compliments!”

About Todd’s Outfit

A great casual look, Todd loves our colorful range of soft, chambray fabrics. His Red Chambray pairs well with denim or chinos, appropriate for any laid-back office.

Dougie Hamilton

Professional NHL Athlete

“Playing in the NHL is a dream come true for me.

I've been a lifelong fan of fashion, always interested in what my favorite athletes were wearing. These days, my team is pretty fashionable, it's fun to keep up with them! But as a taller guy (6’5”) with wider shoulders, it used to be tough to find great fit.

I often found shirts were too short, pants were too baggy. I assumed that I couldn’t wear slimmer clothing because of my regular hockey season travels on buses and planes – being comfortable was the primary goal. But with Blank Label, I finally found the right balance of the fit and comfort I wanted.

The first time I tried on my Blank Label shirts and suits, it was an awesome feeling. Everything fit perfectly, yet I was surprised how comfortable and easy my range of motion was, too. I had finally achieved a tailored look without worrying about feeling restricted in my clothing.

Over the next few years, I’m excited to keep getting better as a player and help my team win a Stanley Cup championship. And maybe, one day, I’ll get involved in the fashions of a company like Blank Label. Maybe one day..."

About Dougie's Outfit

During hockey season, Dougie travels with his team from city to city – and looks good while doing so. His Blank Label suits, in Grey and Navy wool, are foundational colors that remain in style wherever goes. When he's not dressed for press conferences, Dougie wears our casual Grey Chambray Shirt, personalized with a navy gingham contrast.

James Collins

Pastor

“When I’m in front of a room filled with people, it feels so natural to me.

I enjoy speaking with people about topics that are relevant, things they can actually apply to their daily lives. About 1500 people attend my services. It’s a lot of fun… I always think it’s a privilege, really.

I come from a family environment where everybody sings. Can we turn on some Motown for this shoot? That’s real soul music! When I was younger, I actually sat down at a piano and just started playing and learning by ear. I play piano, organ, saxophone, and sometimes the bass.

They know me for wearing suits at church, but I’d never had anything custom-made for me before. I used to find that each brand of clothing fit me differently – I could never find clothing that was long enough for my arms. Things felt like they were measured and made for the masses.

My first experience at Blank Label was wonderful. I could feel a real difference in the cut of this suit, really feel that it was made for me. It fit me to a T. I also put a cuff on my trousers – I'm known to chart my own course. Now, I see all of the guys at church starting to wear the same thing.”

About James's Outfit

Dr. Collins brings energy to his look with his double-breasted Blank Label suit. His compliments in pink – shirt, tie and pocket square – are a great way to anchor the light, playful colors with the deep blue of his suit.

Morgan Brown

International Program Consultant & Marathoner

"I love being outside.

As a kid, I would wake up reading the box scores in baseball and remember watching marathons on TV. I was never one of the guys who could spend 9 hours in the library studying. I always wanted to balance studies with being active and outdoors. The competitive element of athletics is a real spark for me.

I’m a bit taller and always found that athletic or slim fits addressed a few aspects of my fit, but never all of them. If there was a stiff breeze, the back of my shirts used to fly away like a sail. It almost seemed strange to think that an affordable shirt could actually fit well. With Blank Label, I realized I could do better than that.

It was amazing the first time a shirt fit me the way I wanted it to. I feel like I still have the muscle memory to keep tucking my shirts in – getting dressed in the morning, on my bike ride to work, sitting and standing at the office – but I don’t need to anymore wearing Blank Label. With the amount of time I used to spend re-tucking my shirts, I’m probably a more productive person at this point.

I used to think shopping for clothing was a daunting ordeal (read: avoid at all costs), but coming to Blank Label is actually an easier experience. You meet with someone who knows what they’re talking about, who can address the issues you have finding things that fit, and you leave with something you know is going to look and feel great all day long. The confidence I have wearing this stuff is a much different feeling than I was used to. And Blank Label is a place you can trust in coming back to. Now all I have to say is, 'The last one fit great, can you make another one just like that?'"

About Morgan's Outfit

A no-fuss dresser, Morgan trusts the fit of his Blank Label shirts and trousers on a daily basis. His Micro-Grid Transitional Shirt and Charcoal Wool Trousers are essentials for a business causal look, giving Morgan the flexibility to move from morning bike ride to meetings with ease.

Dylan Wolman

Medical Student,
Tufts University School of Medicine

“I have a very stylish friend – he is 6’7” and cannot wear off-the-rack. He had been getting some pants and shirts from Blank Label, so he recommended me to you guys. I had some job interviews coming up and thought these would be good interview clothes. I live pretty modestly and thought Blank Label was affordable.

I’m diabetic and used to have a hard time with my insulin pump working around my clothing. The pump sits right in my pocket, while the thin tube loops its way around my shirt and on to my skin. Blank Label was able to make these efficient button holes on the hips of my shirts, so that the tube doesn’t have to fuss with my shirt anymore. It’s been really helpful!

I’m a 4th year medical student right now. At first I wanted to be a endocrinologist, but I realized that’s not for me. I studied neuroscience as an undergrad and loved that, so I chose radiology. They have their fingers in everything – lots of imaging and interesting procedures.

In med school, we have white lab coats. The length of the white coat actually signifies your knowledge and status in the medical field. As you learn more, your coat gets longer. The problem is they give you these standard-issue, one-size-fits-all coats (they’re boxy and terribly cut). I cared about how it fit so I decided I was going to make my own. I made the fit more flexible, gave it more freedom, so that when working with patients I would be more comfortable.”

About Dylan’s Outfit

When Dylan isn't wearing his medical scrubs, he prefers the polished look and wears his Blue Royal Twill shirt with a narrow tie. It’s simple, smart, and put together. Dylan’s shirts are personalized with a minimal rear slit that accommodates his insulin pump, making it easier and more comfortable to wear throughout his day.

SapientNitro

“When my girlfriend and I started dating, she booked me an appointment at Blank Label. I was wearing suits from Men’s Wearhouse, and I had no idea that my clothes didn’t fit me. I didn’t know what to expect. Now, most of my closet is Blank Label.

I like looking better at work – always wearing a jacket with my outfits, though I never wear a tie. I like to keep 1-2 buttons open on my shirt. My style is dressed up, but not stiff. People always ask me ‘Are you meeting with a client?’ The answer is: ‘No – I just like wearing Blank Label.’

I’m very much interested in marketing management: working with a creative team, pitching new projects, solving client problems, and helping brands connect with their customers. I got my MBA in Marketing, so I see myself doing this for a while.”

About Ben’s Outfit

Ben likes to dress with interest and variety. Breaking away from a full suit everyday, his suit separates look features our Navy Wool Flannel Sportcoat and Rust Brown Chinos. Ben finishes his creative office look with a crisp white Blank Label shirt.

Brandon Cusick

Clinical Researcher,
Boston Children’s Hospital

“A friend of mine at the gym told me about Blank Label. I was interested and found out there was a location in Boston. I had to check it out.

My family has been in the fashion/retail business since I was little, and since it was a family business, I naturally got roped into it. At the time I was wearing my own suits, not caring at all about how I looked or the fit. My friends weren’t into menswear, so it automatically meant that it wasn’t cool. But when my uncle first fit me for a suit, I was hooked. The whole custom-made process is so interesting. It’s so cool.

My style is pretty variable, but it’s all about the fit. I feel like we should look put together every day. Blank Label nailed it on the new chambrays! That’s my new weekend uniform.

Right now, I’m doing research at Boston Children’s Hospital. But my goal is to go to medical school and become a physician.”

About Brandon’s Outfit

Never lacking in timeless style, Brandon pairs his Blue Striped Twill shirt with a sleek pair of navy wool trousers. His look is American business casual defined by a European-influenced fit.

Eric Keen

Oceanographer,
Scripps Institution of Oceanography

“It was a very clear feeling when I put on my first Blank Label shirt. I didn’t realize until then that I had never really worn a shirt that actually fit me before.

I used to buy small or medium shirts because I’m so skinny in my torso. The sleeves wouldn’t fit [Eric is 6’7”], so I’d just keep them rolled up. All my life, I have been really self-conscious about what I do with my wrists. Now, I don’t need to be with my Blank Label shirts.

These jeans are the only pants that I’ve found to fit from one source online. They’re not available anymore – that’s why I got 3 pairs – and I haven’t gotten anything since then. I have to make them stretch for a long, long time. I’m really excited about getting custom pants at Blank Label. It will make my life so much easier.

The area I’m working in out West is facing a lot of potential environmental changes and I’m doing a lot of baseline studies there. During the Fall and Winter I do tons of computer work, then in the Spring and Summer I do field research on a boat in British Columbia. Full of whales and mountains – I love it.”

About Eric’s Outfit

Eric’s longer arm span and slimmer torso made finding fit off-the-rack nearly impossible. With Blank Label, he no longer has to worry about sleeves being too short, or a shirt that doesn’t stay tucked-in throughout his day. Eric enjoys basics – clean-cut shirt and a pair of blue jeans – as long as they fit.

Rocco Carzo

Startup Operations Specialist,
Blank Label

“Fit is what I love and feel best in.

Since I don't have the tall, skinny silhouette of a typical male fashion model, buying clothes always means I'm forced to make compromises regarding fit – i.e. to buy something that ultimately is just ‘good enough.’ That's why custom from Blank Label is important to me – because settling for ‘good enough,’ for average, for anything less than one's best self, that bothers me.

I’m most comfortable in a white shirt with no tie, paired with nice pants, a nice watch, and maybe a blazer on top. But I’d say that my style is definitely minimalist.

I really hate shopping, and never see myself in a mall. My ‘happy places’

are Whole Foods, coffee shops, bookstores, and the gym. One day I’d like to start my own company involving one of those (or all of them).”

About Rocco's Outfit

Fit is everything to Rocco – his athletic build requires something beyond the world of small, medium, or large. Rocco chooses the clean cut look with his White Herringbone Twill shirt, pairing it with his Blank Label Wool Trousers. Keeping active throughout his day, Rocco prefers an opened collar, no tie.
